Day 28 - the Holy Spirit reveals to God’s people
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
1 John 3:24 (NLT)
24 Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.
Fellowship with God! This is really available to us today. We get to know and walk with God. Amazing!
How would you describe your relationship with God? Are you experiencing knowing or walking with God? (For example: I know about Michael Jordan. I’ve seen him play basketball. I could tell you quite a bit of information about him, but I don’t know or have a real relationship with him. I couldn’t tell you what he loves or thinks or desires.)
These couple verses clue us in to how we experience closeness of relationship with God and remain in that kind of fellowship with Him. When we walk with God and say yes to His instruction in our lives, we experience the life of the Spirit in us. The Spirit speaks to us in this, making the closeness of God in our lives known to us and helping us experience the sweetness of fellowship with Him.
Jesus said that eternal life was to know Him and the Father (John 17:3). Today, if knowing God doesn’t seem to be your reality and experience, you may ask yourself a couple questions based on this passage.
- Do I believe in Jesus, that He is God’s Son, who came, lived a sinless life, died for my sins and rose again? The Bible says that when we believe in Jesus our sins are completely forgiven and that we are given His righteousness. This makes us able to then have a relationship with a Holy God. We are also given the Holy Spirit who then is alive in us giving us the ability to walk in that relationship with God by faith.
- Is there any way I am continuing in constant disobedience to God? It doesn’t mean God loves us any less or that the cross has not paid our debt in full, but continuing to sin against God over and over can have devastating effects on our enjoying fellowship with God. Like this verse says when we listen to the Lord’s instruction and are obedient to His Word, we get to enjoy relationship with Him, a relationship that Jesus has made possible and the Spirit is empowering us to walk in every day.
There are definitely many seasons in our lives where God invites us to live by faith, but we can be sure that in those times God is still close. Even when we don’t feel His presence, we can be certain that He has not abandoned or forsaken us. During hard seasons when God feels distant, it can be helpful to recount the faithfulness of God to us in the past and how He has faithfully acted in our lives.
Express your faith to the Lord. Confess any sin to Him and invite the Holy Spirit to make the living God known to you in this moment. Thank the Lord for how He is intimately involved in your life. Thank Him for how He has been faithful to you in the past. Acknowledge that He is your Father and come to Him with any need, desire or hope that you have today.
