Day 40 - walk with the Holy Spirit
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
Acts 7:51 (NLT)
51 “You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you!
1 Thessalonians 5:17-20 (NIV)
17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt
Yesterday we looked at two ways that we could sin against the person of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Today we see two more specific ways that people sinned against the Spirit in the Bible.
We can resist the Holy Spirit. To resist something is to oppose it. It happens when we bring our energy and effort to bear in order to say no to something or go in the opposite direction. When God pours out His Spirit on us, it is not by force that we are empowered to live as He desires. We can resist the Spirit and instead choose to say yes to our own desires and miss out on what God has for us.
Are there ways God is empowering you to serve Him by His Spirit that you are resisting? Is there any calling or instruction that God has given you that you are saying no to out of fear or selfishness?
We can also quench the Spirit. When you quench a fire you put it out. To think that we can do this to the Holy Spirit is a terrifying thought. When we continue to resist, ignore or disobey the Spirit, we experience the consequences of that, and part of the destruction it brings in our lives is that it diminishes our ability to experience closeness with the God who loves us. When the Spirit within us should be fanned into a flame, it is instead possible to quench the fire of the Spirit’s power and influence in our lives by choosing to continue in sin.
Have you quenched the Spirit in your life? Do you readily experience the leading and power of the Holy Spirit or are you numb to the Spirit’s work in your life?
Invite the Lord to pour out His Spirit in your life. Ask God to reveal any ways that you are resisting or quenching the Spirit. Confess that as sin and be done with it. Turn to Jesus in faith and ask for grace to move forward in step with how the Spirit is leading you. Praise God for His grace and power in your life.
