Day 19 - Promise of the Holy Spirit

In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).

John 14:16-17 (NLT)

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

John 16:13-15 (NLT)

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

Not only is the Holy Spirit promised by God in the Old Testament, but here we see that Jesus, Himself, promises the Spirit to His disciples. Here John records one of their last conversations together before His death on the cross, which reveals to us how Jesus understood the Holy Spirit would work in the lives of His followers.   We see that the Spirit is an advocate that will never leave us and will help us by revealing God’s truth to us. This actually will bring Jesus glory because it shows how in harmony the three persons of the Godhead are. What belongs to the Father also belongs to Jesus, and the truth that the Spirit reveals actually comes from Jesus Himself.  They are ever working together - one God in three Persons. Only those that the Spirit lives in, who have been born of the Spirit and made alive to God will be able to receive the truth that the Spirit reveals. For the world, all those who don’t believe, cannot receive him. They aren’t even looking for Him.

Are you looking for the Spirit today? Are you listening for the Spirit to speak to you through God’s word, the One who makes the truth of God known to us? Why or why not?

Thank the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for revealing truth to you. Praise God for giving you the Holy Spirit as your advocate and helper today. Express to God how you need and long for His truth in Your life. Confess as sin any ways that you’ve been living like the world, ignorant to the Spirit in your life. Spend some time in quiet before the Lord in order to listen to Him and ask God to reveal to you how He is working by His Spirit in your life today. Thank Him for what He reveals and will do.
