Day 31 - the Holy Spirit at work within us
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
Paul prays for the church in Ephesus…
Ephesians 3:16-19 (ESV)
16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Paul’s prayer here for the church in Ephesus reveals one way the Holy Spirit may be working within us today. He prays that the Spirit of God would strengthen them with power in their inner being. I can’t help but think back to Samson and how the Spirit of God would come upon him and literally give him great strength in battle. It’s as if Paul is asking the Spirit to do the same thing here, but instead of physical strength he’s asking that the Holy Spirit grant strength and power within, in the person’s inner being.
This work of the Holy Spirit strengthens us to experience Jesus residing in our hearts through faith. As we continue to believe in Jesus and live by faith in Him, the Spirit of God gives us supernatural ability to experience the Savior we trust and hope in. This roots us and grounds us in His love! We are like strong and beautiful fruit bearing trees, and the soil we are planted in, grow up in and are nourished in each and every moment is the love of God. God’s love is so incredible! It is offered widely to all and has such profound depth. There is no end to how far it goes and how high it reaches!
Paul is saying though that there’s more to experience of God’s love than just understanding it in our minds. Truly knowing the love of God takes something greater than our own mental capacity. It takes the work of the Holy Spirit within us. What amazing grace that the Triune God not only loves us perfectly but then also works in our lives so we can have a deep, real and meaningful loving relationship with Him! The Spirit strengthens us in our depths to understand God’s love in a way that surpasses knowledge. And when the Spirit does that work within us, it’s as if we are filled up to the brim with God himself.
Would you say that you know God’s love in the way that Paul is praying for here?
With thanksgiving confess your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to your heavenly Father. Invite the Holy Spirit to affirm in your heart that Christ lives in you and to grant you supernatural strength to know the breadth, length, height and depth of the love of Christ Jesus for you. Spend some time worshipping the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for the perfect, unfailing and enduring love of God that is for you.
