Day 43 - the Spirit at work in the Church
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
Philippians 3:3 (ESV)
3 For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh
Paul is making an identity statement here about who belongs to God’s family. In the time of Abraham and throughout the Old Testament circumcision was the sign that marked you as a part of God’s family. In this verse we see three other markers. We can know who God’s people are today as these things are true of their lives: they worship by the Spirit, glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh. All of these are direct results of believing in Jesus.
We worship by the Spirit of God. Did you know that you can’t worship God without God’s help? That true worship doesn’t originate from within us. Rather it is a work of God’s Spirit within us. The Spirit of God moves us to worship and service. The Triune God is both the subject of our worship, the object of our adoration and affection and the source from which our worship comes from. God is active in our worship of Him making us Spirit-led participants. This is true for all of us who are God’s people.
When we choose to be complacent or apathetic in our worship or service to God, we are saying no to the work of the Spirit in our lives and a defining mark of what it means to be a child of God.
Have you experienced the Holy Spirit empowering you to worship and/or serve God? How specifically?
Allow and rely on the Holy Spirit to empower you to worship God right where you are reading this. Praise the Triune God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit for He is and for what He has done as the Spirit of God brings it to your heart and mind.
