Day 10 - the Spirit empowering God’s people (OT) - Zerubbabel
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
Zechariah 4:6-9 (NLT)
6 Then he said to me, “This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 7 Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: ‘May God bless it! May God bless it!’” 8 Then another message came to me from the Lord: 9 “Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me.
Besides having the most fun name to say five times fast, Zerubbabel was also the leader of the tribe of Judah when God’s people were released from Babylonian captivity and allowed to return to Israel. He was called by God to rebuild the temple which was in ruins, and he immediately got to work seeing that the foundation was laid. Then sixteen years passed by without any other progress. This was somewhat because of outside opposition, but also because God’s people became apathetic and self absorbed in the building of costly homes for themselves. Still, God was not done using Zerubbabel. The Spirit of God is poured out, and Zerubbbabel was roused from his apathy to lead others and finish the work God had given him to do. The triune God can easily bring mighty mountains to dust in order to make a clear path for His will to be done. Nothing can stand in the way of what He desires. Even today He continues to pour His Spirit out on imperfect and broken people to see beautiful things done in the world that He loves and cares for, and because of such grace, all around see that it’s Him, our gracious God who has sent and empowered us.
How has God showed grace to you during times of apathy? Are there any ways the Lord is rousing you from complacency to serve Him today?
Thank God for His faithful love and patience when we are apathetic and self absorbed. Praise God for the constant and amazing gift of the Holy Spirit. It’s an amazing grace that the Spirit of the living God, a person of the Godhead, part of the Trinity is empowering and leading us each and every moment. Take a moment of quiet before the Spirit of God to be aware of how He is leading and empowering you today. As the Spirit is leading you, say yes and amen; then share with someone what God has impressed upon your heart today.
