Day 24 - the Holy Spirit brings power and life
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
2 Timothy 1:7-8 (NIV)
7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God.
Who or what are you afraid of? Who do you need help loving? Where do you need to exercise self-control?
The Spirit of God who lives in us helps us with each one of these. Power has been given to us so that we might be God’s witnesses, those who take the good news of Jesus to the ends of the earth. This power helps us to not be ashamed of Jesus or our brothers and sisters who are looked down upon or are suffering for Jesus. Rather, we have power to boldly declare the gospel even when we ourselves experience suffering. We have nothing to fear. God has given us His Spirit, and we now have power to live this out!
It makes sense why the Holy Spirit would empower us to love others as well as share the gospel. For what weight would our message carry if our actions said something different and we were unable to love those God sent us to? As well, we can easily see why God’s Spirit would also give us self-control. When we are concerned with the desires of our flesh, the pursuit of them can often numb us to how God is at work around us, sending our hearts in the direction of selfish ambition rather than His good purposes and will.
How is the Holy Spirit at work in your life in each of these three areas? How does fear prevent you from participating in how the Spirit is working?
Thank the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for working in your life today. Praise God for the power to witness, love and self-control that is yours through the Holy Spirit today. Think - is there a friend, family member, co-worker, neighbor, etc… that needs encouragement today in any of these areas? Pray for them and then call/text/write them and let them know you were thinking of them today.
