Day 22 - the Holy Spirit brings power and life

In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).

Romans 8:9-11 (NLT)

9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) 10 And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. 11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

How do we know we belong to Christ? Paul communicates the answer rather simply. We know we belong to Jesus if the Spirit of God lives in us. If you don’t have the Spirit of Christ living in you, you do not belong to Jesus. One may then ask, how do I know if the Spirit lives in me? Besides knowing it because God has said so in His word we also know it as we see the effects of the Holy Spirit in our life, when we see that we are no longer complete slaves to the desires of our flesh, but rather we are controlled or influenced by the Holy Spirit.

Certainly we still have sinful desires because of our sinful bodies, but here is the promise - the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us. God by His Spirit is giving life to our mortal bodies this very moment. We get to experience a foretaste of the resurrection we hope for and will know in full one day when Christ returns or we leave this life. Today we don’t have to say yes to sin or the broken desires of our flesh, rather we have power by the Holy Spirit within us to live a new life.

What kind of power does it take to raise the dead? What kind of effects can that kind of power bring about if it was fully at work in your life today?

Praise God for his power and might. Worship the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for all that was accomplished in the death and resurrection of Jesus! Thank God that the same Spirit is poured out on your life today. Ask God to show you how He would like you to use the power you’ve been give today and then ask Him for the grace to walk faithfully with Him in the Spirit’s power.
