Day 17 - Promise of the Holy Spirit

In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).

Ezekiel 36:26-27 (NIV)

26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

God speaks through the prophet Ezekiel about 600 years before Jesus is sent into the world to accomplish what is promised here. God tells His people then and us today about the new covenant He will provide through Jesus.  Those who believe in Jesus will literally be raised from death to life. We go from being dead in our sins to alive in Him. Eternal life begins when we believe in Jesus, and Ezekiel reveals how that life has changed us forever. No longer do we have a dead heart that is unresponsive to God. We are given a new heart capable of relationship with Him. God has even put His own Spirit within us. This Holy Spirit is at work within us, moving us to follow God’s commands and walk in His ways.  The same Spirit that brought about new life in us is at work today helping us say yes to Jesus and live for Him.

How do you see the Spirit at work in your life today? How does your life reflect a heart that is responsive to God and a will that desires to follow God?

Thank God for the new life that has been given to you and the miraculous change that has happened when you believed in Jesus. Praise God for placing the Holy Spirit in you and for the work of the Spirit in your life today. Confess as sin any ways that you have hardened your heart and said no to the work of the Spirit in your life. Ask God to lead you to repentance to turn away from sin and back to Him in faith. Thank Him that where the Spirit is leading you is life.
