Day 16 - Promise of the Holy Spirit
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
John 3:3-9, 16-17 (NIV)
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” 9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. …16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
Nicodemus, a ruling Jewish religious leader, comes to Jesus at night to talk. One of the most quoted, memorized and spoken about verses occurs in this chapter - John 3:16. Because of God’s great love for the world, He has sent his only Son, Jesus, into the world to save it, and whoever believes in Jesus will have eternal life. Earlier in the conversation Jesus tells Nicodemus that if he wants to truly be a part of God’s Kingdom, he must be born again, born of the Spirit. It’s not Nicodemus’ natural birth that grants him access to God’s Kingdom. His Jewish heritage and even the fact that he’s a religious leader of the Jewish people are not capable at all of bringing him true life. This is why Jesus has come, to save the world from the death we are all in because of sin that separates us from a holy God. Jesus came to make a way for us back into relationship with God by raising us to new life through faith in Him. To be a part of God’s Kingdom takes nothing short of a miracle, something supernatural - it takes the work of God Himself. We must be born of the Spirit, or in other words, receive new life. It is as we are born of the Spirit that we enter into God’s Kingdom and experience the benefits of God’s rule and reign in our lives. Such salvation, eternal life, is a miracle of God, the free gift promised to those who believe in Jesus.
What does it mean to be born again of the Spirit? What was the motivating factor for God to send Jesus to save us? Do you recognize the new life that comes from God’s Spirit as an act of God’s love for you?
Spend some time thanking God for His love. As an act of worship, express to God your belief in Jesus and all that He has done for you. Praise God for how He has given you new life by His Spirit. Also thank God for the truth of His Word and the Lord to give you an opportunity to share this truth with someone else this week.
