Day 15 - the Spirit in the life of Jesus

In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).

Hebrews 9:14 (NLT)

14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.

1 Peter 3:18 (NLT)

18 Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.

Romans 1:4; 8:11(NLT)

4 and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord. …11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

There is so much amazing truth in these verses. We see the eternal nature of the Holy Spirit confirmed here. We see that Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice for our sins to God by the Holy Spirit’s power. We see that the shed blood of Christ offered in His death is the only thing capable of cleansing our consciences from the guilt of sin. We see Jesus willingly offer his life — He who never sinned, suffers by taking our sins upon Himself and dying for them so that we might be brought safely home to God. The same Holy Spirit at work in the death of Jesus is the One who raises Him from the dead. Father, Son and Holy Spirit are at work together in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Then there is also the amazing truth that this very same Holy Spirit lives in those who believe in Jesus and is at work this very moment giving life to our mortal bodies today. The same power of God displayed in Jesus’ victory over sin and death is available to us by the Holy Spirit to experience resurrection life and victory over sin today!

What do these verses reveal about what Jesus suffers and accomplishes for us? How is the Spirit at work in your life today bringing about resurrection life and victory from sin?

Before praying slow down for a moment and reflect on Jesus suffering and death. Give the moment the full attention of your heart and mind. After reflecting thank the Triune God for the forgiveness of sins, for the cleansing of guilt, and for power to live in victory over sin. Confess to the Lord how you need His forgiveness, grace and freedom today and then praise Him for the work He is doing and will do.
