Day 14 - the Spirit in the life of Jesus
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
Matthew 12:28 (NLT)
22 Then a demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see. 23 The crowd was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.” 25 Jesus knew their thoughts and replied… 28 But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.
The religious rulers of the day are not happy with Jesus, and so they accuse him of doing miracles by Satan’s power. This terrible accusation comes after they have already starting plotting how to kill Jesus. Jesus makes it clear, though, that the miracles He’s doing are by the Spirt of God. It is the Spirit’s power and work on display when He heals this man and casts out the demonic forces that have plagued him. As such, Jesus says that the Kingdom of God has arrived. The rule and reign of God over sin and evil is made known, giving a blind and mute man his sight and voice — what an amazing work of God’s Spirit! Even still, those who would consider themselves religious men are completely blind to the work of God happening right in front of them. They are in as bad a condition themselves as the man whom Jesus has healed.
Where is God at work around you today? In whom? To do what? For what purpose?
Praise God for the work and power of the Holy Spirit in the life of Jesus that has been revealed in this passage of Scripture. Then ask the Holy Spirit to make known to you where God is at work around you today. Invite the Lord to show you any ways that you have acted like the religious leaders in these verses, unaware of what the Spirit is doing even when it is happening right in front of you. Then allow the Holy Spirit to help you pray for what you need so that you might turn from that way of thinking and participate by the His power in the work He is setting before you today.
